Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5704 and #5864-B. Both were built by GM-EMD. #5704 is an EP-22 constructed in September of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5864-B is an EP-20 built in February of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in March of 1967. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. |
